Commendation. Appreciation. These are two words, like apology, are easier said than done. But think about it: how did you feel when someone sincerely commended you for your effort? How did you feel when someone showed his appreciation for your contribution? Granted, some tasks are minial and unimportant, but the time and energy spent surely deserves a pat on the back!
Sometimes, we get a little bigheaded, thinking that every job on hand we have, everything we do is important and we are indispensable from the current tasks. So we ‘conveniently delegate’ seemingly easy, unimportant tasks to others (could be our subordinates or others whom we “see” to have a lot of leisure time to while away. Then we give 101 limitations to them to work on their tasks. One could make a slight mistake but instead of letting the one involved know, we tell another who is kindly doing another a favour (which would probably never be repaid) off. Seriously, how could a clueless person know the whys and hows without being informed?
Really, it’s time for us to reflect on how we treat others – PARTICULARLY family, friends, workmates, subordinates. Do we take them for granted for being on standby whenever and wherever we need them to do something? Could we at least try to put ourselves into their shoes and consider what they have done, the trouble they have taken to perform what others call “Value Added Services”? Instead of merely laughing it off as a small matter and act as if it was no big deal, could we at least offer our thanks?
Do not underestimate the power of SINCERE commendation and appreciation. It heightens one’s motivation to continue on serving us. It brightens a person’s day. It brings a smile to one’s face. It brings joy to one’s heart. Most importantly, we show that we care and appreciate every ounce of sweat and energy and willpower that one has used to lighten our workload, our burden.
Remember, SINCERE commendation and appreciation comes from the heart, NOT out of duty or responsibility or because you have to. Otherwise, there really isn’t any use commending and appreciating people. Go, show and tell someone that you care NOW before it’s too late.
